Midtown Open House, February 26

The Midtown Academy's Open House has been rescheduled for Friday, Feb. 26th from 1:00-3:00, with the
Middle School Information Session (for interested current 5th grade families and prospective 6th, 7th, and 8th grade families) beginning at 1:00.

Please note that the application deadline is still Wednesday, Feb. 24th and the lottery will be held on Thursday, Feb. 25th. So, if you think you might be interested in The Midtown Academy and want to attend the open house, make sure you complete the application before the deadline.

5th grade puppet show

Once again this year, the Midtown Academy 5th grade class has created a puppet show under the guidance of the Black Cherry Puppet Theater. There will be to performances for the students on Friday January 29, one at 9:00 am and another at 10:00. Parents are welcome to attend.

And if you can make it to the Friday show, there will be a special evening performance on Mon Feb 1, right before the STAPL (PTO) meeting.

Fall Open House: Oct 30

Students and families interested in applying for admission to The Midtown Academy are invited to attend our Fall open house on Oct. 30 from 1:00 - 3:00. It is a great opportunity to see the school and ask any questions you may have.

Welcome back to all the students, teachers and staff at Midtown. Here are a few tidbits to kick off the school year.

The first STAPL/PTO meeting of the school year will be held on Monday, September 14 in the multipurpose room. STAPL/PTO meetings are usually held on the first Monday of the month, but this month's meeting has been pushed back a week due to Labor Day.

With the new school year upon us, several updates have been made to the Midtown website as well. Highlights include an updated staff list, a new school calendar and a copy of the school dress code.

Midtown's Words on Wheels

For seven years, the Maryland Transportation Authority has sponsored the "Words on Wheels" competition. In the event, students from several Baltimore area middle schools write poems which are then given to students from MICA. The MICA students create paintings inspired by the poems, with the winning poems and painting made into posters that are placed on MTA buses as they go through the city.

Several MICA students have blogged about the poems they received and posted pictures of the paintings inspired by Midtown's poets, and the winning posters, three featuring poems from Midtown students, can be found on the MTA website.

Fun Day postponed until June 12

Midtown's annual fun day will be held on Friday June 12th at Sumpter Park from 12:30 -6:00.

If you would like to volunteer to help during the event, there will be clipboards with volunteer opportunities during the day. Or just ask someone how you can help.

Please keep in mind that this is a parent sponsored event. Teachers will be doing other work, or will be off during this time and will not be available to watch children. Please make sure that any child attending has adult supervision.

8th grade graduation - June 4

Graduation for Midtown's 8th grade class will be held on Thursday, June 4. Ceremonies begin at 2:00 at MICA's Brown Center (including the traditional reading of Oh the Places You'll Go) and will continue at 6:30 at Midtown with the Spring Concert at 6:30.

College for a Day

Students from Grettysburg College recently prepared and executed a 4 day after school program for 6-8 grade students at the Midtown Academy and several other schools in Baltimore. 32 of our middle students participated. Students learned and researched their career goals and looked into how they might make those career goals a reality. Students then presented their plans for the future with peers and family on Friday, March 13. This coming Thursday, March 26, participating students will take a day trip to Gettysburg where they will get to experience "college for day".

Midtown Academy Students explain why Michele Obama is a role model

"Journey to the Whitehouse" makes a stop at Midtown

Dr. Joan M. E. Gaither began making a "Journey to the Whitehouse" Quilt in June of 2008. The quilt was conceived as a work of public art wheremembers of the public would be able to add their own square. Earlier this month, several Midtwon students went to see the quilt and some of their ideas and visions were incorporated into the quilt. Winter Celebration Concert

The Midtown Academy will host a Winter Celebration Concert on December 18 at 6:30 in the multi-purpose room. Join us for performances by the primary performance choir, the intermediate performance choir, the 6th grade music class and the middle school elective choir.

Holiday Shop comes to Midtown

Every year, the Midtown Academy hosts a holiday shop where students can purchase gifts for the holidays. Midtown asks for donations to help make this sale a success. Items for the sale can be donated by sending them to the school office where they will be collected by Rhonda Jones. And for the first time this year Midtown students will be making custom jewelry that will also be available for purchase.

On Friday Dec . 19 (2nd and 5th graders) and Monday Dec 22 (K, 1st and 3rd and 4th graders), students will have a chance to purchase the donated items and the Midtown made jewelry, with the proceeds going to the graduating 8th grade class.

Midtown's Annual Fundraising Dance

Join the Midtown Academy Family on Friday November 21 from 7:00pm - 11:00 pm for the Solid Gold 70's Fundraising Dance.

The dance will be held at the Prince Hall Masonic Temple at 1307 Eutaw Place and tickets are $35 with all proceeds going to the school. For more information contact Kimberly Tuttle.

Midtown Votes Early!

On Oct 30, the Midtown Academy held its mock presidential election. Over the past month, students were able to learn about several aspects of the voting process, while preparing for the mock election. There was a voter registration drive that enabled students to register before voting day arrived, and on "election day" there was a booth set up in which each student who had registered had the opportunity to cast a secret ballot.

Activities related to the mock election spanned several different classes. For example, in art students made "vote" buttons and posters and some students wrote essays about the importance of voting, in additional to the work done to hold the actual vote. Thanks to all Midtown students, parents and teachers who helped make this event a success.

The Midtown Choir at the Festival on the Hill

This year's annual Festival on the Hill, held around the 1400 block of Bolton Street, will once again a feature a performance by the Midtown Academy choir. The choir will preform from 10:30-11:00, and the festival goes from 10:00 - 4:00 and features plenty of performances, crafts and activities for children.

New Martial Arts T-Shirts and Instructor

New martial arts t-shirts will be on sale at Midtown in the multipurpose room, right after opening on Monday and Tuesday and in the front office. If you can not make it to MIdtown, you can also purchase shirts by sending in cash or a check in a SEALED envelope with your child's name on it. Shirts are $8 a piece.

And speaking of Martial Arts at Midtown, we have a new instructor this year. Sifu Gamel Spencer will bring World Wing Chun to Midtown and its students. Look for more details in next week's Friday folders.

STAPL/PTO Meeting September 8

The first STAPL (Student, Teacher and Parent Life) Committee meeting of the school year will be held on Monday September 8 at 6:30 in the multipurpose room. Agenda items will include elections, committee sign ups and fall fund raising. Please join us if you can.

Charter Schools Gain Acceptance in Maryland

With the new school year upon us, and the 1st charter school opening in Baltimore County, there have been several articles written about news schools. In Maryland, the majority of charter schools are in Baltimore city, and the August 24, 2008 Baltimore Sun article "Charter growth: A skeptical public gradually embraces charter schools statewide", provides a good look at how charter schools are gaining popularity in the counties. The article also addresses how some of the concerns people had about Charter Schools have proven, so far, to be unfounded.
